Training and Coaching Sessions on Cultural Diversity |
Cluster Workshops in April 2010
|
Three workshops took place between the 26th and 30th of April 2010 and were conducted by Shirley Wouters, IP training specialist and Najeh Abu Shamsiyeh, IP Palestinian National Consultant. The Palestinian Ministry of Education was represented at the workshop in Ramallah through Ms. Aman Jarrar and Mr. Jamil Ishtayeh.
The two workshops in Jenin were represented by the directors of the districts. This was a welcome addition as it gave the participants a sense of the importance of the Twinning project and the contributions being made by KfW and IP-Consult. The Minister and Deputy Minister were expected to join at a certain point of the workshops but could not attend because of other necessary commitments.
Each workshop was one day long, which started at 9:00 and lasted until 17:00. It was clear that teachers have a limited time window with which we can work. The first part of the workshop focused on cultural diversity, while the second part consisted of the students presenting their prepared projects on cultural diversity and the final part of the program was to take part in a cultural and active session in the area. This consisted of visiting museums and taking part in games and a common afternoon meal.

The workshops centered on looking at the cultural diversity within Palestine and then comparing the results with those from the German schools. Such themes as sense of self and space, dress and appearance, values and beliefs, time and time consciousness, learning culture, work habits, food and eating rituals were discussed. The differences within Palestine were interesting as the students noted that within their own culture their identity and habits are different from their close neighbors.
Palestinian School Presentations
The presentations were made by the students and it was quite obvious that a great deal of work had been invested in their preparation. The themes of the projects were based on the idea of presenting something about Palestinian culture; which would be of interest to the German students. The workshops were in three clusters: North A cluster, North B cluster and the South cluster as the following:
